چکیده
The intuition of chance and probability develops at very early ages.1 However, a formal, precise definition of the probability is elusive. If the experiment can be repeated potentially infinitely many times, then the probability of an event can be defined through relative frequencies. For instance, if we rolled a die repeatedly, we could construct a frequency distribution table showing how many times each face came up. These frequencies (ni) can be expressed as proportions or relative frequencies by dividing them by the total number of tosses n : fi = ni/n. If we saw six dots showing on 107 out of 600 tosses, that face’s proportion or relative frequency is f6 = 107/600 = 0.178 As more tosses are made, we “expect” the proportion of sixes to stabilize around 16 .

is equivalent to probit, logit, and related models. However, the formulation that assumes latent variable Zi is allowing Gibbs sampling scheme (eg., Chib and Albert 1993) and Johnson and Albert (1999)). Successive sampling from full conditionals, (i) [β|Z, Y ] and (ii) [Z|β, Y ]. Assume that F is normal distribution and that the above model is probit. Then the distribution for β given Z is simp...
متن کاملIsye8843a, Brani Vidakovic Handout 2 1 the Likelihood Principle
Likelihood principle concerns foundations of statistical inference and it is often invoked in arguments about correct statistical reasoning. Let f(x|θ) be a conditional distribution for X given the unknown parameter θ. For the observed data, X = x, the function `(θ) = f(x|θ), considered as a function of θ, is called the likelihood function. The name likelihood implies that, given x, the value o...
متن کاملISyE8843A, Brani Vidakovic Handout 9 1 Bayesian Computation.
If the selection of an adequate prior was the major conceptual and modeling challenge of Bayesian analysis, the major implementational challenge is computation. As soon as the model deviates from the conjugate structure, finding the posterior (first the marginal) distribution and the Bayes rule is all but simple. A closed form solution is more an exception than the rule, and even for such close...
متن کامل1 Model Search, Selection, and Averaging.
Although some model selection procedures boil down to testing hypotheses about parameters and choosing the best parameter or a subset of parameters, model selection is a broader inferential task. It can be nonparametric, for example. Model selection sometimes can be interpreted as an estimation problem. If the competing models are indexed by i ∈ {1, 2, . . . , m}, getting the posterior distribu...
